My last post was about our day climbing to the Batu caves in Kuala Lumpur (KL). It was hot, tiring, and great fun.
Our next two stops were in Penang, Malaysia and Phuket, Thailand. Today we are at sea. We were in both Penang and Phuket last year and had good times in both places: a cooking school in Phuket; and, a street fair in Penang. This year, however, because of the intensity of our stay in Singapore and KL, we opted to use the two port days as “sea days.”
This year we were still recovering from the heat and the climb in KL, so we spent both port days on the ship reading, relaxing, and just gathering our strength for our next overland off-the-ship adventure. Saturday we will leave very early in the morning (5:45 AM) for Bagan, Myanmar.
We will stay overnight in Bagan and will visit some of the world’s most magnificent archeological sites. Bagan rates with Angkor Wat and Borobudur as one of the most significant archeological sites in southeast Asia. It is doubly important since it is in Myanmar (Burma) which has just recently become more open to tourism.
So…this is a short post with no pictures. It is more a placeholder as we anticipate a rather long post describing our Myanmar adventure.
Stay tuned…
PS: I hope to have a hot-air balloon ride over the Bagan plains as part of our visit – weather permitting…keeping our fingers crossed…
